1. Proper Feeding (Most Important)
Fattening depends largely on feed quality. Provide a balanced diet that includes:
- Energy feeds: maize germ, maize meal, molasses, cassava peels
- Roughage: maize silage, hay, napier grass (chopped)
- Protein sources: cotton seed cake, sunflower cake, lucerne
- Minerals: mineral lick or dairy/beef meal
2. Feed Consistently
- Feed 2–3 times daily
- Maintain the same feeding schedule every day
- Introduce new feeds gradually to avoid stress and weight loss
3. Provide Clean Water Always
- A cow requires 40–70 litres of clean water per day
- Adequate water intake improves feed digestion and weight gain
4. Deworm and Control Diseases
- Deworm every 3 months
- Control ticks, flies, and other parasites
- Treat sick animals promptly
5. Reduce Excessive Movement
- Keep the cow in a clean, comfortable shed
- Too much movement burns energy needed for fattening
6. Use Molasses Supplement (Optional)
- Feed 0.5–1 kg per day
- Enhances appetite and speeds up weight gain
7. Choose the Right Animal
- Young bulls or steers fatten faster
- Healthy animals respond better to feeding
- Local and crossbreeds perform well with good nutrition
8. Be Consistent and Patient
- Weight gain becomes noticeable after 3–4 weeks
- Effective fattening takes 90–120 days
