Rice bran is a good energy and protein supplement for dairy and beef cows. It helps improve milk production, body weight, and overall body condition.
⭐1. Type of Rice Bran to Use
– Fresh rice bran (not rancid)
– Dry bran is better — wet bran spoils fast
– Ensure it has no mould or bad smell
⭐2. Recommended Amounts (Daily)
– Rice bran should not be the main feed, only a supplement.
For Dairy Cows
– 5–7 kg per day for cows producing 10–30 litres
– Mix with dairy meal or other concentrates
For Beef / Fattening Cows
– 3–5 kg per day
– Combine with silage, hay, or Napier grass
For Heifers
– 1–2 kg per day
For Calves (4 months and above)
– 0.5–1 kg per day
⭐ 3. How to Feed It
You can feed rice bran in three ways:
Option A: Mix with Other Concentrates
Rice bran + maize germ + cottonseed cake
Example mix (simple):
– 50% rice bran
– 30% maize germ
– 20% cottonseed cake
This gives good protein and energy.
Option B: Mix with Silage or Napier
– Sprinkle the bran on chopped fodder
– Mix well so the cow eats all of it
Option C: Feed Directly
– You can feed it dry Or mix with a little water to reduce dust
– Do not soak for long (it ferments quickly)

– Introduce slowly (start with 1 kg per day).
– Provide clean water always.
– Add salt lick for minerals.
– Avoid feeding bran that is wet, mouldy, or smelly — it causes digestive problems.
