WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO HARVEST MAIZE FOR SILAGE?

At Tamia Feeds, we believe quality silage does not start in the store — it starts in the farm!

Many farmers ask: After how many months should maize be harvested for silage?

✅ Maize for silage is usually ready 3 to 4 months (90–120 days) after planting.

However, the exact time depends on:

  • The maize variety
  • Rainfall and weather conditions
  • Soil fertility
  • Farm management practices

The BEST stage to harvest is the ½ to ⅔ milk line (Dough Stage).

At this stage:

✔ The grain is soft like dough

✔ The cob is well filled

✔ Leaves are still green

✔ Whole plant dry matter is around 30–35%

This stage gives: 🌟 High energy content

🌟 Good starch levels

🌟 Proper fermentation

🌟 Better milk production

🌟 Healthy and productive animals

🚫 Harvesting too early (2–2.5 months):

  • Too much water
  • Low nutrients
  • Poor silage fermentation

🚫 Harvesting too late (after 4+ months when fully dry):

  • Too hard and dry
  • Difficult to compact
  • Reduced digestibility

📌 Simple test: Break the cob.

  • If white milk flows out → Too early.
  • If it is soft like dough → Perfect time.
  • If very hard → Too late.

At Tamia Feeds, we are committed to supplying premium quality silage harvested at the correct stage to ensure maximum nutrition for your livestock.
